War on terror
By Naguib Mahfouz
I was horrified by what happened to the head of Egypt's diplomatic mission to Iraq. It is immeasurably gruesome to kill a man who is simply doing his job and has taken no part in hostilities of any kind. Even in war, attacks against civilians are strictly prohibited by all laws and norms. Soon after this horrendous crime took place bombs hit the London underground recalling the horror that gripped the world with the September 2001 attacks on New York and Washington. If anything it proves terror is doing more damage than good. Iraq is under occupation and one of the two partners in the war is being hit by terrorists. What does this tell us?
The war on terror is cause for worry not relief, and it provides a windfall of excuses for those seeking to spread terror.
Terror is repugnant, no one is disputing that. But let us think of the what is feeding the terror. Terrorism is often an answer to injustice, and the way to eliminate it is not through violence but through justice.
