What next?

Egypt is entering a critical phase, one that will determine the future of the country. The recent presidential elections were a landmark in our quest for democracy. At last we saw a new dynamic emerging, a new way of conducting domestic affairs. We must build on this and learn how together we can improve our lot.
The people now expect the promises made during the campaign to be acted on. They anticipate an improved standard of living and expect the president to introduce the reforms he promised.
During the presidential race all candidates, not just Hosni Mubarak, spoke of change. There may have been differences between the various programmes, and in the kinds of reform thought necessary. What everyone agreed on is that reform is essential.
Egypt needs democracy. The people want to speak and want their opinions to be heard and only democracy can guarantee that this will happen. The litmus test will be the next parliamentary elections. If fair and free, the elections will give new momentum to the nation. We have fallen behind for too long. Now we must begin to catch up.
