THE PASHA's PROJECTS: Detailed sketch of the building and machines used in Muhammad Ali's new gun-powder store in Rodah, Cairo (above); overview of the saltpetre manufactory built in 1818-1819 outside Cairo on the ruins of ancient Memphis (top). The two sketches were drawn by the French architect Pascal Coste who lived in Egypt between 1817 and 1827 and worked for Muhammad Ali designing and documenting numerous construction projects.
