Honouring scientific achievements
YESTERDAY, President Hosni Mubarak rekindled one of the state's neglected commitments: honouring scientists and their achievements. Addressing a group of the nation's best scientists and academics on Knowledge Day -- a public occasion originally conceived by the July 1952 Revolution to encourage scientific achievement -- Mubarak handed out generous awards to some of the most established and accomplished researchers and top university professors and graduates.
Mubarak promised further state resources and commitment to encourage the acquirement of knowledge and its dissemination in society. Egypt, the president said, will establish an independent authority to supervise the quality of education, as well as a host of new research centres.
