Still angry

The Muslim Brotherhood took its wave of demonstrations against the cartoons mocking Prophet Mohamed to Cairo this week, reports Salonaz Sami

The banned group held two protests in the capital: the first took place on Friday at Al-Azhar Mosque after noon prayers; the second on Monday at Al-Azhar University, where thousands of Brotherhood students recited verses from the Holy Qur'an and called for a boycott of Denmark.

The defiant, well-organised university demonstration -- which also featured a short play performed by the students -- lasted nearly four hours, and was attended by Brotherhood MPs Said Askar and Mohamed E-Beltagui. Participants interviewed by Al-Ahram Weekly said Muslim governments had not done enough vis- à-vis the cartoon issue. "There should have been immediate political boycotts against Denmark and Norway," said a student named Sherif Mansour. The students also issued a statement indicating that condemnation of the cartoons was not enough.

While Friday's protest also included the burning of the Danish and Norwegian flags, Monday's did not. Previous Brotherhood demonstrations on the same issue have taken place in Alexandria.
