ETCHED MUSINGS

"The Musical Box", an exhibition of 21 etchings by Amre Heiba, opened last Sunday at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo. Inspired by the rock band Genesis' song which gives the exhibition its title, the etchings are painstaking variations on motifs -- the clock, the paper boat, the half-open drawer, the pens, the solitary figure, the playing cards, the box, the wrought iron banister, the jotted lines -- that rather than illustrate the lyric, draw it into a series of musing. Part melancholic part ironic, the series repeatedly dwells on desire, alienation and time past.

Heiba (b. 1962) obtained his bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Alexandria University before studying graphic design in Germany for three years. This is his 13th one-man show.
