Dr. Said El Naggar

On the occasion of the second anniversary of the passing of Dr. Said El Naggar, we would like to pay tribute to his lasting legacy to Egypt. Dr. El Naggar was a tireless advocate of democratic reforms for the country's advancement in all fields. He believed in the necessity of meaningful constitutional reform that would guarantee the separation of powers, accountability of the executive, and the independence of the judiciary and the Parliament.
At the time of his death, Dr. El Naggar was Professor Emeritus of Economics at Cairo University. Besides teaching economics to several generations at Cairo University, Dr. El Naggar had an distinguished career as an international public servant. He served as Director of the United Nations Economic and Social Affairs Office (ESCWA) in Beirut, Lebanon; as Executive Director of the World Bank, representing the Arab countries; and member of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Said El Naggar's legacy lives on in the determination of his many disciples to continue his struggle for democracy.
