In addition to contributing photographs to a number of magazines and newspapers, including Al-Ahram Weekly, and holding a host of exhibitions among them an exhibition at the New York Lincoln Center in 2003 (reviewed in the New York Times ), Sonbol is the first photographer in Egypt to produce picture books. Some of the books he illustrated are Opera (Cairo Opera House, 1993), Mulid ! (American University Press, 1999) and Mamluk Art (Electra, Museum With No Frontiers, Austria, 2001). He also collaborated with other photographers on Pharaohs of the Sun (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1999) and The Pharaohs (Bompiani Arte, Skira Group, Geneva-Milan, 2002).
