Zamalek beat arch rivals Ahli on penalties to win the newly created handball Super Cup in a thrilling final at Cairo Stadium's indoor complex.
The two teams went to the shootout following a 20-20 tie in regulation time. From the spot, Zamalek won 4-3.
Like football, the super cup pits the winner of the cup, Zamalek, with the league's best, Ahli.
The first half saw complete dominance by Zamalek while Ahli seemed lost despite the experience of its players. Zamalek ended the first half 10-7.
The second half took a U-turn. Zamalek tried to keep their lead while Ahli were playing to narrow the gap. Ahli levelled it at 18-18 20 minutes into the second half, before going up for the first time, 19-18, in the 25th minute.
The last 10 minutes were marred by several two-minute suspensions of players in both teams, yellow cards and verbal warnings. Zamalek took a 20-19 lead but a red card allowed Ahli to draw 20-20.
Ahli could have won the match but were denied by a last-second save by Zamalek goalkeeper Hamada El-Roubi.
