Lufthansa and EgyptAir accord

WOLFGANG Mayrhuber, chairman of the executive board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, and Atef Abdel-Hamid, chairman of EgyptAir, have signed a code-sharing contract.

Lufthansa's cooperation with EgyptAir will start with the introduction of the winter timetable at the end of 2007. The two airlines will in future offer all flights between Germany and Egypt with joint flight numbers. Code-sharing, to be introduced on the services between Frankfurt and Munich to Cairo, as well as those from Frankfurt to Alexandria, is part of the agreement . Further code-share services, especially to the tourism centres of Egypt and North Africa, are being planned following official approval by the air traffic authorities. EgyptAir is also planning to transfer its flight numbers to Lufthansa flights within Germany and the rest of Europe as well as to North America.

Egypt is one the most important markets for Lufthansa on the African continent. The airline currently offers its passengers 17 flights per week from Egypt to Germany. There are 14 weekly flights from Cairo to Frankfurt and three times per week from Alexandria to Frankfurt.

EgyptAir is keen to improve its access to the German market. In the current summer timetable, the airline increased its operation to Munich to daily flights. More connectivity is expected by the arrival of EgyptAir flights at Terminal 2. Furthermore, the airline offers daily flights to Frankfurt, two flights to Dèsseldorf and two flights to Berlin. All together, EgyptAir operates 18 flights per week from Egypt to Germany.

"EgyptAir is an ideal partner for us because with this cooperation we can position ourselves long-term in one of the most dynamically growing markets in North Africa. We are thus further extending our worldwide network of routes for our customers," said Lufthansa chief Mayrhuber at the signing ceremony.

"Our cooperation with Lufthansa represents a strategic alliance which will enhance our European market. This comes as part of our corporate strategy aimed at forging partnerships with leading airlines in targeted markets. The code sharing between EgyptAir and Lufthansa will certainly lead to the enhancement of the product", said EgyptAir's Chairman Abdel-Hamid.

The passengers of the two airline companies will benefit from the mutually-coordinated timetables with more flight possibilities and better connections between Germany and Egypt. In addition, participants in the frequent flyer programmes of the two airlines will be able to collect miles on the route networks of Lufthansa and EgyptAir and redeem them with both airlines.

The last road show

TO PROMOTE Egypt in other Arab countries to guarantee a fair share of the Arab travel movement to the country, the Ministry of Tourism and the Egyptian Tourist Authority (ETA) organises a number of annual road shows to Arab states. This year the road shows targeted 10 countries -- Saudi Arabia, Oman, Libya, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Tunisia, Qatar, Bahrain and Jordan. The last road show, headed by Amr El-Ezaby, head of the Egyptian Tourist Authority, visited Jordan on 22 June. The delegation included officials from the ETA, the Tourist Development Authority (TDA), the Egyptian Federation of Tourist Chambers, EgyptAir and media representatives. Members of the road show held meetings with Jordanian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Osama El-Dabbas, general manager of the Organisation for Promoting Tourism Michel Nizal and head of the Jordanian Association for Travel Agents Heider Ziyadat.

In 2006, the number of tourists from Jordan to Egypt was 147,000, an increase of 17 per cent compared to 2005. Preliminary indications for 2007 emphasis the continuity of growth in the number of tourists from Jordan to Egypt.

Egyptian-Lebanese friendship

EGYPT last year received 9.1 million tourists, an increase of 5.5 per cent over 2005 while the number of tourist nights reached 90 million, an increase of five per cent over 2005. The figures were announced by Minister of Tourism Zoheir Garana while addressing the Egyptian-Lebanese Friendship Association. "The number of Lebanese tourists travelling to Egypt increased during the last five years. In 2006 they recorded about 55,000 tourists with an increase of 15 per cent over 2005. The number of tourist nights in 2006 was 590,000 with an increase of 37 per cent over 2005," said Garana.

He added that the Arab world receives only five per cent of the international tourist movement whereas inter-Arab tourism movement is about 40 per cent. "This number could be increased which would be the first step in tourist cooperation between the Arab countries," he said.
