EGYPT'S modern pentathlon champion Yasser Hefni regained his world title won in 2005 when he claimed the gold medal at the World Youth championship recently held in South Africa.
Hefni outclassed 43 of the world's top pentathletes, scoring an overall total of 4,274 points, ahead of Russia's Maxin Shratox who finished with 4244. In third came Dimitri Dance of Hungary with 4,224.
The president of the Egyptian federation Ahmed Nasser said the results of the top three players were so close it made the tournament exceptionally difficult.
Two years ago, Hefni claimed the world title at the World Youth Championships in the Czech Republic. Last year, injury in the fencing discipline denied him the opportunity to defend his title.
Other Egyptians taking part in South Africa were Alieddin Gomaa, 16, who finished 26th with 3,848 points, Mustafa Nofal who collected 3,748 and 32nd place in his debut in the tournament, and Mahmoud El-Naggar who followed with 3,564.
In the women's game, the best Egyptian was Gihan Tawfik, 15, placing 21 with 3,648 points. Reem El-Sayed finished a disappointing 24th, collecting 3,540 points, after winning the bronze medal in the team event at the World Cup. In 27th place came Nada Ashraf with 3,460 points.
