Comandante against convention
Shortly before Ernesto Che Guevara's disappearance from public life in 1966, and on his way to Algeria, he stopped in Cairo, where he was warmly received by former president Gamal Abdel-Nasser. During his memorable visit to Egypt, Che attended a number of formal and informal meetings with Egyptian politicians and intellectuals. Popularly known as the "Enemy of Convention", he exchanged ideas with the leading artists and intelligentsia of the day such as Faten Hamama, Ahmed Bahaaeddin, Louis Awad and Ihsan Abdel-Quddous.
From Algiers, Che proceeded to Congo where he organised the Lumumba Battalion and later travelled to Angola and finally to Bolivia where he met his tragic end at the hands of the CIA on 9 October 1967. Forty years later the ideas of Che still inspire millions of young people the world over. This week two commemorations of the 40th death anniversary of Che were organised in Santa Clara in Cuba, where the Argentine radical landed in Cuba to spread revolution and Santa Cruz in Bolivia where he was assassinated. He will be remembered by millions across the world for many more years to come.
