Fatima Mahdi, Zawtar Al-Sharqiyye: Fatima owns a small tobacco field struck in cluster bomb attacks last year. Nevertheless, she goes to the field every day to harvest the leaves that she will sell to feed her family. She said she would rather die working than let her family die of starvation. The family's plight was exacerbated following the tragedy which struck her eldest son Mohamed, who used to work as a car mechanic until his hand was severed by an explosion that also burned his body. He was 16 years old at the time. parent page (6 - 12 December 2007, issue #874) |
