For kicks

NOT for the first time Barclays Bank Egypt prepares for some fierce competition, but this time on the playing field. The winning team of the 2008 Barclays Premier League Global Five-a-Side Employee Tournament will play against other teams from around the globe for the finals.

The football tournament is an annual event. A team of seven players are selected from each country in which Barclays Bank operates, with the finals taking place at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United football club.

The event is regarded by the bank as part of its constant pursuit of building a strong sense of team spirit highlighting its guiding principles "Winning Together" and "Best People", said Khaled El- Gibali, managing director of Barclays Bank Egypt and North Africa.

The seven players who will represent Barclays Egypt at the tournament competed in qualifying rounds held at the Wadi Degla Club two weeks earlier in a one-day tournament. The tournament included 16 teams who were well selected from Barclays among 1,800 employees from 51 branches nationwide.

The guest of honour was Hassan Shehata, the Egyptian national team coach. Akram Tinawi, corporate banking director and executive board member, handed out prizes to the three winning teams. The winner will go to the UK for the finals on 16 May.

Eleven other teams from Barclays Europe, Middle East and Africa are due to compete with the Egyptian team in the UK, including squads from France, Ghana, Ireland and the UAE.
