Fury natural and man-made
Sir-- It is the week of 11 September when the loss of 2,981 American lives precipitated the deaths of some 1,004,000 Americans and Iraqis over the past seven years. It is also the week when the death toll from storms in Haiti rose to 351, landslides in North China claimed 128, and at least 50 people were killed by a rock slide in Egypt. Meanwhile, government enquiries continue into the case of five women in Pakistan who were shot and presumably buried alive some six or eight weeks ago for opposing their families' traditional expectations.
Human fury seems small compared to nature's unless we consider the US in Iraq. Or unless we put the Pakistan killings in context.

Right on the money
Sir-- In 'One down, seven to go' ( Al-Ahram Weekly 4-10 September) the Awakening Council's warnings that Al-Anbar in the Iraqi province could be turned into another battlefield of sectarian forces is 100 per cent correct.

Kill and run
Sir-- The US government drops 500- and 2,000-pound bombs on Muslims, killing Arab women and children, but when they face a confrontation with Russia they run the other way.

Call for help
Sir-- I have not faced any problems yet concerning returning faulty articles ('Getting even' Al-Ahram Weekly 31 July-6 August). All the same I would like the hotline number for complaints concerning consumer protection.
