The fire-master
The absence of the tradition of fire-fighting naturally led to a string of blazing disasters. Al-Ahram Weekly investigates
IN 1965, Major Mahmoud Farid Mohamed, director of the fire-fighting school at the time, wrote a book titled Fires and the Extinguishers. In this book, he discussed the types and causes of fires, and the methods and equipment needed to fight them.
The water network and fire hydrants are all discussed in detail, as well as manual and automatic fire extinguishing equipment. Mohamed describes in some detail alarm systems, lightning rods, fire engines and the work of fire-fighters. And he offers advice to businesses and households on how to introduce fire precautions and safety measures.
When he wrote this book, the author had been working for the Fire Department for 20 years, helped extinguish more than 2,000 fires, and investigated the causes of 500. He also trained most of the fire- fighters in the country and advised government departments and businesses on fire-fighting and rescue operations.
