|Al-Tayeb Saleh was one of the most gifted writers in the Arab world. He had a way with words. His classic The Season of Migration to the North had a tremendous impact on readers in both the Arab world and the West. He was Sudanese, and yet he was an Arab novelist and storyteller. I illustrated him with his African features, bold and big and daring. His bulging eyes and prominent forehead demonstrated his African roots. Just like his pen unveiled his Arab cultural heritage. His hair was intermingled like the tributaries of the eternal River Nile and we shall not forget his memorable work. parent page (26 February - 4 March 2009, issue #936) |
