![]() Salah Jaheen reached his zenith during the swinging 1960s and those were the revolutionary days of yesteryear. His colourful illustrations projected the voice of the nation, we were one voice, one nation. Painting abided by that single-minded determination and viewpoint. I see the eremite behind his desk searching for the right idea, and behold it comes forth the enlightening moment of inspiration. I sketch him at that particular moment we are together in one work. There was an understanding between us, and working alongside us were the artists Hegazy, Bahgat, Al-Labbad, Ihab, Ragai, and Leithy, and sometimes the artistic director Abul-Einein would join us and the great writers of the illustrious period. Jaheen's forehead is illuminated before me and I see inside indescribably wonderful ideas. And, the editor-in-chief Ihsan Abdel-Quddous -- the harvest was great, a profusion of giving, and giving in abundance and quartets anew. parent page (30 April - 6 May 2009, issue #945) |
