When I first met Dr. Emad El Sharkawy in 1982, he was the official Liaison to UNDP representing the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, and I was the UN Senior Energy Adviser assigned to assist the Ministry in formulating Egypt's first National Strategy on the Development and Use of New and Renewable Sources of Energy. Our cooperation continued and our friendship grew as he became chairman of the board of the Egyptian Electricity Authority. Dr. Emad was pragmatic with vision, a sharp mind, and a good listener. He believed in team work and collective wisdom. He was amongst the first government officials to encourage career development of women engineers. His loyalty, sense of responsibility and dedication to his job made him a role model for his junior colleagues. He is survived by his two sons Amin and Adel.
Rest in peace, Emad, your friend, Essam Mitwally
