What goes down...
AFTER a seven-year hiatus since its discovery, the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) will today lift a huge red granite tower, originally part of the pylon in a temple dedicated to Isis, from the Mediterranean seabed. The temple was found alongside Cleopatra's mausoleum in the sunken royal quarter that now lies beneath the waters of Alexandria's Eastern Harbour.
An international press conference is to be organised by Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni and SCA Secretary-General Zahi Hawass to highlight the event. Hawass told Nevine El-Aref that the pylon's tower will eventually be the centerpiece of an underwater museum to be constructed off shore in the Stanley area in Alexandria. The museum will display over 200 objects raised from the Mediterranean seabed.
