Just an illusion
Sir-- Re 'Biting the hand that feeds' (8-14 April, Al-Ahram Weekly ) Hamid Karzai is not a "warlord" in the real sense. He was a CIA operative selling arms to Afghan Mujahideen fighting the Red Army. The Taliban were after his head when Hikmatyar helped him escape to the US where he established a few restaurants. He is a US "green card" holder. He is acting like any other Western stooge in the Muslim world, but unlike others in Pakistan and Iraq, Karzai refuses to bless America's war on Iran for Israel's sake.

Prisoner plea
Sir-- Re 'Back to making decisions' (1-7 April, Al-Ahram Weekly ) it would be splendid if the president adds to his list of priorities the approval to amend Article 122 of the 1989 law on drug related offences. This will bring joy to the hearts of many prisoners and their families. A few innocent prisoners may have a chance at freedom.

Still the same
Sir-- Re 'A comprehensive flicker' (1-7 April, Al-Ahram Weekly ) nothing has changed between Russia and the United States. There's nothing of merit in that so-called treaty; the countries don't trust one another one iota. It's a mutual photo- op. And, I just love the term "Nobel Laureate". Each leader needed some pictures for Pravda and Time, respectively. No one seems to look at what this means vis-a-vis Israel which has up to 500 nukes. Which would mean the Israelis would be in the same league as these world powers.

Don't push it
Sir-- If any European textbook depicted Muslims the way Muslims depict Christians and Jews, the Muslim world would react with fire. Europeans are tolerant but they should not be pushed too hard.
Unfortunately, similar ideas can be found in Egyptian and Palestinian school textbooks.
