Club Med Sinai Bay now open

The new Club Med Sinai Bay resort has opened on 1 December. Inas Mazhar attended the soft opening

As of Sunday 5 December, the five-star resort started officially receiving guests. Four days earlier, an elegant, stylish and high-class soft opening took place, as the creme de la creme of Egyptian society was in attendance as were national and international media people.

Minister of Tourism Zoheir Garana, the resort owner and Chairman of Orascom Hotels & Development Samih Sawiris, as well as senior Club Med officials, came for the grand debut.

Reaching this destination usually necessitates a one-hour flight from Cairo International to Sharm El-Sheikh Airport after which one needs to hop on a bus for another three-hour drive. But our trip was even worse. Because of the thick fog that enveloped the country this past week, our flight was delayed for six hours. We reached Sharm El-Sheikh at midnight and after the bus drive we got to our hotel at 3am.

Despite the hectic journey it turned out to be worth the wait and the suffering. At the soft opening, Sawiris's guests enjoyed a three-day stay in the extravagant resort where they enjoyed the luxurious facilities of Sinai Bay. They also attended a special Egyptian night at the resort which is located within the area of Taba Heights. Folklore and Pharaonic dances were performed and the guests interacted with the dancers and oriental music, followed by addresses given by Garana, Sawiris and Club Med officials. Activities were organised, including safaris and Taba Heights tours, while the spa facilities were used to their maximum.

The name Sinai Bay conjures up the immense cultural wealth of this symbolic site. It occupies an exclusive space with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Aqaba and direct access to the beach, including 14 family suites on two floors with a solarium and furnished outdoor lounge, concierge service, private overflow pool, open bar and snacks, including champagne and unlimited access to activities, services, children and teen clubs (during the school holidays).

In the heart of the Sinai Peninsula, Club Med Resort provides exceptional opportunities to discover the region's famous sites, including St Catherine's Monastery and the troglodyte city of Petra in Jordan. A unique resort in a beautifully preserved bay covering 27 hectares, and flanked by a 600-yard stretch of private beach, this is the ideal site for exploring the fabulous underwater life of the Red Sea.

The resort is the ideal option for those in search of privacy, customised services and luxury comfort, combined with all the advantages of the true Club Med spirit -- luxury accommodation in duplex suites with a solarium terrace and the unlimited access to activities and services at the resort.

A beautiful bay with crystal clear sea, this is one of the finest sites in the region. Fine, natural sand, no pebbles. Gently sloping access to the sea, magnificent coral in zones close to the beach. The resort is surrounded by basalt and granite hills, making a perfectly secluded site. Protective sandals may be useful at times.

Frenchman Olivier Sanchez, the resort chief, got the job in April and was happy to guide his guests around all what the resort had to offer, which was plenty.

Club Med Sinai Bay is the third in Egypt. Club Med El-Gouna opened in 2004 while Club Med Luxor has been undergoing renovation for the past two years.
