Cairo University initiative

STUDENTS at Cairo University are working to raise environmental awareness on campus, writes Mahmoud Bakr

During the final session of the Sixth Arab-African Youth Environmental Forum, recently held in Luxor and Aswan, Cairo University students offered their views on reducing water waste and improving the environment.

Mohammad Ahmad Abdel-Fattah, an agriculture student at Cairo University, said that participants at the forum plan to discuss several proposals with the university’s student union. These proposals aim to reduce water waste and raise awareness of water issues, he said.

“We will start implementing the skills we learned during the forum,” he said.

Abdel-Fattah was one of ten students who took part in workshops related to water and the environment, along with visitors from 30 Arab and African nations. Ten students from Cairo University who attended the forum say they will start a programme to fix faulty plumbing at the university, plant trees and produce documentation about water consumption.

Dina Mohammad Fathi, a media student at Cairo University, said she and her group intends to carry out volunteer work on and off campus, especially in underprivileged neighbourhoods around the city.

The students, working in cooperation with the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Sewage, discussed organising a-----wareness campaigns about recycling, greenery and water-related hygiene in Cairo University and surrounding areas, she said.
