As Valentine’s Day approaches, many of us are thinking of ways to make it special. We may want to give our loved one a gift that tells him or her how much we appreciate them. Well, this year why not forget the flowers and chocolate and go for a handmade Valentine’s gift instead?

Believe me; nothing says “I love you” better than a unique gift made by hand. It’s the most romantic form of Valentine’s gift, and it will mean a lot to your loved one and show how much you care.

Here are some creative ideas for beautiful DIY gifts that will help you express your affection this Valentine’s Day:

Magnetic memos:
Cut decorative paper to fit inside a biscuit tray and glue it to the bottom of the tray. Add photographs of you and your loved one, a handwritten poem or a love card. By doing this you’ll have made a functional yet stylish magnetic memo board.

Passionate pillow:
It’s all about pillow talk this Valentine’s Day. Turn a pair of plain pillowcases into a romantic gift for your sweetie with a DIY iron-on message of love.

Love-quote apron:
The most thoughtful gifts are the ones we make ourselves. Print a favourite quote that expresses your feelings onto iron-on transfer paper. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to print it onto a cute apron. If your Valentine likes to cook, he or she will definitely love this amazing apron.

Memory candles:
Display your favourite photographs in a passionate way. Use black-and-white photocopies of your selected photographs and transparent contact paper to transfer the images to glass candleholders. By doing this you’ll turn a set of plain candleholders into a romantic gift that displays your much-loved moments forever.

Heart bookmark:
If your valentine is a booklover, this practical gift could be just right. A cute DIY heart bookmark can be used for holding pages in books, notepads and calendars. Your loved one holds a special place in your heart, and now he can keep his place in a book too.

Made-with-love jar:
Valentine’s Day isn’t just about celebrating your sweetheart. Let your friends, neighbours and family members know how much you love them in a quick but charming way. Nothing does the trick as well as a batch of homemade biscuits. Fill a wide-mouthed jar and then add pretty paper labelled “Made with Love” to dress up the jar.

Photograph pillows:
Pillows are something very personal, making them not only romantic gifts but also beautiful display pieces for your bedroom or family room. Turn a cherished photograph into a beautiful photograph pillow. Capture your memories using the technique described above.

Sharpie mugs:
Start your morning with a sweet message on a drinking mug that will put a smile on the faces of both you and your valentine! Remember to use an oil-based sharpie marker so that your messages don’t fade with time.
