The second round of the Stunt Bike Championship was cancelled after a huge fire broke out at the Cairo International Convention Centre in Nasr City where the event was scheduled.

The event was scheduled to be held on Friday 6 March but two days earlier the blaze, which gutted several of the centre’s buildings, extinguished any hopes of holding the tournament.

“We prepared for the championship last Wednesday but unfortunately we needed to evacuate,” championship organiser Mahmoud Al-Deeb said. “It was postponed for three weeks and we are searching for another place.”

Al-Deeb said the first round of the championship at the Oasis Sheraton was “very successful. It was the first of its kind in Egypt. This sport has a very large audience and a fan base. We also have very talented motorcyclists.”

Last year, 10 motorcyclists competed in three categories in three races involving bike stunts, the trail bike and quad bike. A bike stunt is acrobatic and the maneuvering of the motorcycle. The trail bike is for smaller motorcycles designed with special tires for riding on unpaved roads and rough tracks. The quad is an off-road four- wheeled motorcycle.

The motorcyclist has four minutes to show his skills and perform his stunts to collect points.
