Mother, I love you

Let's talk about better living! Our new interactive family corner aims to expand our lifestyle horizons with practical little pearls of wisdom from the editor and input from our readers

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to give a thought to how you will show your mothers how much you care. It’s the one day of the year that mothers get spoilt, with breakfast in bed or surprise presents.

And though it’s important to remember and reach out as much as possible to your own mum, you should also take time to celebrate the many other women who have encouraged and challenged you over the years: a teacher, a woman who gave you the kind of spiritual guidance you couldn’t find at home, an aunt, a grandma or an employer who played a vital role in your life.

But remember, mothering is not limited to mothers, or even to women. Maybe your single dad had to be more of a mother than he had planned.

When we were kids, it was easier to give a simple gift that would impress our mums. Even just going all day with good behaviour and a few extra hugs would probably do the trick. But now it may require a bit more thought and time.

So instead of searching for some flashy cards or gifts, try one of these unique ideas to make your mum feel special on her day:

- Every hour of Mother’s Day, post on Facebook or Twitter one more thing about your mother that you are grateful for. You can also attach a link to a song she adores, for example.

- Give your mother something that shows your gratitude for the other 364 days of the year. Make a unique calendar with personal photos, and mark it up with special days, anniversaries and favourite quotes and verses. Give her a jar with 365 pieces of her favourite candy. Sign her up for year-long subscription to her favourite magazine.

- Give her a day off from all the regular stuff she does on this day. Let her celebrate the day in the way she wants. Cook something special for lunch or dinner so she can have a day of pure relaxation.

- Memories are always good to cherish. Make your mother a nice picture collage showing special moments with her.

- Pamper your mother and book her a yoga session followed by body massage and spa. As your mother is busy every day and doesn’t get the time to relax, this would definitely make a lifetime memory for her.

- A carefully picked gift from her favourite perfume range or a sophisticated necklace would add charm.

- Throw a surprise party and invite all your mother’s close friends and relatives. Choose the decoration and food to your mother’s taste.

- Plan a picnic at a place of your mother’s choice. This quality time will add happiness to your life and be really memorable for you and your mother.

- Book her an Omra trip to satisfy her spiritual side.

- If she’s no longer living, honour your mother’s memory.
