Egyptian penathletes Amr Al-Geziri and Heidi Adel captured a silver medal and second place in the mixed relay competition in the modern pentathlon World Cup 3 in Rome, Italy.

From 9-13 April 105 men and women athletes from 40 countries competed in the tournament.

The Egyptian duo of Al-Geziri and Adel finished with a total of 1,469 points — 238 in fencing, 337 in swimming, 282 in riding and 612 in the combined (running and shooting) event.

“I was really happy because my combined was great, especially shooting,” Adel said. “We took first in fencing. Then, after swimming we got second place. In riding, we came third. After the combined event we finished second.”

Adel, only 15, added, “Riding was little bit difficult for me because I started training equestrian only three months ago but I did well.”

President of the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation (EMPF) told Al-Ahram Weekly. “I am proud of the performance of the Egyptian penathletes. Al-Geziri took first in fencing and swimming. He is a very good swimmer but Adel finished third in swimming though she is still young. Al-Geziri gave an amazing equestrian show.

Now, Al-Geziri has climbed to world No 5 among the top10, and qualified for the World Cup final. He will compete among the top 50 in the world. ”

Al-Geziri qualified for the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro after admirable performances in World Cup 1 in the United States and World Cup 2 in Cairo.

South Koreans Woojin Hwang and Soo Jin Yang took the gold medal with 1,474 points — 226 in fencing, 344 in swimming, 300 in riding and 604 in combined.

Chinese Qian Chen and Jiahao Han won the bronze medal with a total 1,465points— 232 in fencing, 347 in swimming, 293 in riding and 593 in combined.

In the mixed relay senior world rankings, Mexico took first place with 147 points while Egypt came second with 134 points. Italy finished third with 128 points.

In the men’s final, French Simon Casse captured the gold medal with 1,200 points — 229 in fencing, 341 in swimming, and 630 in combined. Great Britain’s Joseph Evans collected 1,200 points — 229 in fencing, 341 in swimming, and 630 in combined. Great Britain’s Thomas Toolis hauled in 1,199 points — 236 in fencing, 326 in swimming, and 637 in combined. Al-Geziri garnered 1,199 points — 257 in fencing, 331 in swimming, and 611 in the combined.

In the women’s final, Russian Donata Rimsaite took first with 1,096 points: 250 in fencing, 265 in swimming and combined 581. Poland’s Laura Moya finished second with a total of 1,092 points — 236 in fencing, 286 in swimming, and 570 in combined. Russian Svetlana Lebedeva finished third with 1,079 points — 250 in fencing, 290 in swimming, and 539 in combined.

“My shooting wasn’t good in the semi-final,” Adel added. “I was good except for the last group which was very bad. I didn’t enter the final. I was so near, only one second off.”

“Al-Geziri was in training camp in Italy a week before the championship but he has a small bump in the connective muscle,” Al-Arian said. Yasser Hefini didn’t train because of an injury to his spine. We cancelled his trip just a few days before World Cup 3 in Rome. Sondous Tarek participated in order to regain her self-confidence after a poor performance in World Cup 2 in Cairo, especially in fencing.”

World Cup 4 will be held in Hungary, Kecskemét, from 30 April to 4 May. “Islam Hamed and Adel will play in the mixed relay in order to gain more experience,” added Al-Arian.
