Under the sponsorship of the Citadel, the Egyptian Windsurfing Federation will play host to the third Arab Windsurfing Championship with the participation of 10 countries in addition to Egypt the host country. Bahrain, Palestine, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Morocco, Libya, Algeria and Tunisia will be represented by 85 players who will compete in Optimist, Laser and RCX Windsurfing boards.
Medhat Khalifa, head of the federation, told a press conference earlier this week that two Egyptian senior players, two junior players and two female players will take part in the competition’s three events.
Khalifa said that out 25 windsurfing clubs in Egypt only six are really taking part in the federation competitions even though the others are fully equipped. “As a newly appointed federation, we are targeting to attract more clubs and more players on the national level. We have started by appointing one of the best coaches in the world to take over the national team, the ex- national team coach of Germany, the Dutchman Patrick Peterk.”
Mahmoud Abul Soud, vice president of the federation said the sport’s equipment was very expensive. “For example in this championship we are providing 80 boats. Each is for LE100,000 and that is why sponsors play a big role in such events.” Abul Soud added that this sport is the best propaganda for Egypt’s touristic sites which are various. “We have good weather in Egypt during winter, the best accommodation and the proper facilities so if we link up with the Egyptian tourism chamber we can do a lot.”
Khalifa added that the Arab countries Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Tunisia “have worked hard to improve the standard of their game and their players” while Egyptians did not which is why it is very difficult to guess what are the chances of the Egyptian national team among other Arab teams.
