ON SUNDAY, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the shortlists of nominees for its two prestigious football awards: the African Player of the Year and the African Player of the Year based in Africa. While Algeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Morocco, Congo and Senegal fielded the lion’s share of players on each list, only two Egyptians were named.

The African Player of the Year featured the names of 37 football players who play mostly outside the continent. Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who plays for AS Roma in Italy, and Bassem Morsi of Zamalek were among the nominees.

Surprisingly, Morsi was also named to the African Player of the Year based in Africa, along with his Zamalek teammate Hazem Emam. For the first time, no player from Ahly was selected for any list.

Ahly’s Mohamed Abu Treika was runner up in the African Player of the Year in 2008 and won the best African Player of the Year based in Africa award three times — 2008, 2012 and 2013.
