Entre Nous: Tall and proud

Let’s talk about better living! Our interactive family corner aims to expand our lifestyle horizons with practical little pearls of wisdom from the editor and input from our readers

Want to look taller and thinner? Everybody does, especially since taller women look better in clothes. And every woman wants to play up her best assets and look stunning.

Unfortunately, height is not something you can change with diet or exercise, like so many other body challenges. So until science comes up with a way for petite women to add a few extra inches, your best bet to make yourself look taller and leaner is to rely on a few clever fashion tips to fake those extra inches.

Here are some quick tips to add some visual height to your look.

Go vertical. Choose one strong vertical element like an unbuttoned jacket or vest to give you the strong vertical line that keeps the eye moving up and down, rather than across. You can also use the oldest trick in book: Vertical stripes, they create long lines, thus making you look taller.

Wear a V-neck top. The V-neck top adds visual height and elongates the neck. The deeper the V-shape, the greater the illusion of height.

Go tonal. Using colour to enhance the illusion of height is a highly effective strategy. If you want to look taller, don’t chop up your body with contrasting colours. Contrary to popular belief, wearing light colours can help you look taller and leaner as long as you wear an outfit in similar shades of one colour.

Avoid anything calf-length or knee-length. When you’re petite, it’s just a fact that when it comes to skirts and dresses you should either go super long, or super short. Mini-skirts show more skin, which creates the illusion of a longer leg. A well-cut maxi skirt can also give you the appearance of looking taller.
Choose solid versions that skim the length of your body, which will create a long vertical line. The covering dress, as well, is the perfect dress silhouette to create a strong vertical line if you add a pair of wedges or heels.

Opt for high-waisted skirts or trousers. High-waists, when worn correctly, can trick the eye into thinking you’re taller by elongating your lower body.

Try flared jeans. Fitted jeans with a distinct flare at the bottom create the illusion of a longer leg, especially when the hem hits the top of your shoes. For optimal height, be sure to pair your flares with a waist-length top.

Avoid horizontal stripes. Stripes can be your best friend or worst enemy. They need to be strategically placed on the body parts you want to emphasise. Vertical stripes add length, horizontal ones add width.

Wear heels. The best way to visually increase your height is to physically increase your height. Even a slight heel will give you a longer look. You can opt for sleek, knee-high boots and leggings or skinny jeans in the same colour to create a long, unbroken line.
Choosing legwear in the same colour as your shoes is another great way to add visual height. And, of course, really high heels are still the best way to look taller.

Chop your hair. Long hair drags petite girls down, while shorter hair does the opposite. Remember, piling your hair on top of your head really gives a taller impression, and creates a more vertical line.

Be aware of proportion. When you’re petite, it’s important to be sure all your clothes fit properly. Keeping your accessories appropriately scaled to your body size is a smart move: ditch the oversized shoulder bag.
A long scarf wrapped around your neck with ends left dangling and layers of long necklaces all create a strong vertical presence as well. Stick with skinny belts. It will define your natural waist in the most flattering way possible. Even going with vertical seaming or prints can add to the eye travelling up and down rather than across.
