THIS week saw the Egyptian midfielder Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan return to his Belgian side Anderlecht following a shoulder injury which sidelined him for nearly two months.

Despite entering the pitch in the second half as a substitute, Trezeguet did his share in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Westerlo in the Belgian league. Replacing teammate Dodi Lukebakio in the 81st minute, the former Ahly midfielder had an opportunity to score but his attempt was saved by the goalkeeper.

Twenty-one weeks into the Belgian competition, Trezeguet’s side Anderlecht is meanwhile second in the league table with 41 points, two behind leaders Gent.

The game and the victory against Westerlo marked Trezeguet’s return. A shoulder injury and surgery had kept him off pitch for almost two months. He had suffered the injury during an international training session in the UAE where the national team faced Zambia in October.

The 22-year-old former Ahly midfielder, named Mahmoud Hassan but nicknamed Trezeguet due to his resemblance to former France striker David Trezeguet, had joined Anderlecht on a season-long loan in August. The Egyptian club had said then that the Belgian side will have the option of making the loan deal permanent if they wished. When signing with the player, Anderlecht’s manager Herman Van Holsbeeck had sang Trezeguet’s praises, describing him as a “talented player” on the club’s official website.

“He is an international player. We will give him the time and we will help him to cope with his new club,” Van Holsbeeck said.

Trezeguet, known for his speed and marauding runs down the flanks, said then that he was looking forward to a “real impressive career” with the Belgian giants, adding that he had sought advice from Egypt’s former team captain Ahmed Hassan, who was a hero at Anderlecht during his playing days.
