IN AN UNPRECEDENTED achievement, three of Egypt’s judo national team players collected one silver and two bronze medals in the final day of the European Open for men held in Oberwart, Austria, reports Abeer Anwar. In the +100kg category, Islam Al-Shehabi took the bronze medal after overcoming his Romanian opponent 100-0. He also defeated his Slovanian challenger in the 16 round 101-0 but lost in the semi-final to the Brazilian Rafael Silva to take third place. The second medal for Egypt, a silver, came from Mohamed Abdel-Mawgoud in the 66kg. Abdel-Mawgoud faced fierce competition from his rivals from Portugal and Kazakhstan but reached the semi-final after beating Azerbaijan to take the silver. Mohamed Yehia captured the second bronze for Egypt in the 80kg after losing to his Kazakhstan opponent.
