THE ZEYADA shopping festival organised by Al-Ahram Establishment has ended after a three-week run. Zeyada promoted and encouraged various shops to offer discounts and sales on their goods in a bid to boost commercial activity as well as tourism, writes Nesma Nowar.

“We want to attract people to come to Egypt where they can enjoy the country’s tourist attractions, go shopping and have a good time,” said Mohamed Al-Naggar, general manager of advertisements at Al-Ahram.

Al-Naggar said there was no shopping festival in Egypt “where people can enjoy real discounts” on various goods as is the case in Europe and the US.

“Many shops claim they have up to 50 or 70 per cent discounts but when you go in you find very limited sales,” Al-Naggar told Al-Ahram Weekly

He added that the festival encouraged customers to buy by offering them free tickets for the entertainment that featured in the end.

Lebanese singer Nancy Agram was invited to perform, marking the end of the festival on Friday 4 March. The event was held in the main hall of Cairo Stadium’s indoor complex. Up to 15,000 people attended, Al-Naggar said.

He said the festival was a success for all parties and that it will be held once or twice a year. He added that it will be marketed internationally in its future editions with the purpose of attracting tourists to Egypt.

The festival had the backing of the ministries of youth and supply as well as the Egypt Tourism Authority.
