THE WOMEN’S volleyball team of Egypt’s Ahly club has reached two milestones. They retained the African title, capturing the 2016 Women’s African Championship after beating hosts Carthage of Tunisia 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13) in the final held at Sidi Bousaid in Tunis, Tunisia.

In the process, Ahly also broke the continental record by taking its eighth title, one more than their arch rivals Kenya Pipeline. Ahly increased their overall historical medal tally in the championship to 19, with eight gold, seven silver and four bronze medals.

The Tunisian champions, who have eight national team players in their squad, achieved their best ever finish in their history with the silver medal after taking third place in the 2015 edition.

Pipeline of Kenya overcame Rwanda’s Revenue Authority 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-17) in the third place match. The Kenyans claimed their 16th medal with seven gold, six silver and three bronze.

Egypt’s Al-Shams finished in fifth place after crushing Sfax of Tunisia 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-17), while Kenya Prisons took seventh place after they cruised past Algeria’s GSP 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19).
