EGYPT has been in the throes of a sweltering heat wave that has affected most governorates across the country. At the time of writing, the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) said the heat was expected to continue for the next 48 hours.

Throughout most of the past week, the heat was stifling. Temperatures on 14 May reached 42 degrees Celsius in Cairo. The following day it hit 45 degrees. Temperatures inside cars rocketed to 50.

In the coastal city of Alexandria, temperatures were a more moderate 34 degrees, with a high of 40 and 39 in the cities of Ismailia and Suez respectively.

Sharm El-Sheikh witnessed a blistering 46 degrees while Hurghada endured a scorching 44 degrees.

Things got so heated that an EgyptAir bus at Cairo Airport caught fire. The fire on bus No 33, which was empty at the time, was extinguished by firemen.
