EGYPT needed penalties to edge Rwanda 3-2 on Saturday at Cairo Stadium and book their place in the final round of the qualifiers for the Under-20 football Africa Cup of Nations, reports Abeer Anwar.

The visiting team shocked the Pharaohs with the only goal of the match through Vedaste Niyibizi seven minutes from time. Egyptian goalie Mohamed Essam fumbled with Dominique Savio Nshuti’s free-kick spilling to Niyibizi, who fired home to cancel the Pharaohs’ lone goal advantage from the first leg three weeks earlier in Kigali.

The late winner forced the tie into penalties where the Egyptians had the upper hand. Osama Galal, Ahmed Hamdi and Ramadan Sobhi scored for Egypt against Abeddy Biramahire and Blaise Itangishaka for Rwanda.

Egypt will face the winner of Gabon versus Angola in the final round of the qualifiers.

Seven teams will emerge from the qualifiers to join host Zambia for the final tournament of the 20th edition of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for 26 February to 12 March 2017.

Meanwhile, the elective General Assembly of the Benin Football Federation was held last week Friday and Anjorin Moucharafou was elected president.

CAF President Issa Hayatou has welcomed the decision, describing it as lucky. Consequently, FIFA lifted the suspension of Benin and the AFCON 2017 qualifier between Benin and Equatorial Guinea scheduled for Sunday, 12 June 2016 in Cotonou.
