Helping people with disabilities

Al-Ahram Weekly

AT Helm’s “Cairo 2016: A City for All” conference, publications were available to remind people of the basic human rights and ethical codes that some people unfortunately may still neglect when interacting with people who have disabilities.

Among the ways that ordinarily abled people can help others who are disabled, the publications highlight the following guidelines:

• Our aid devices and tools are personal, so please do not touch them or move them.

• Before deciding to help me, please ask if I need your help because you might hurt me if you do it in the wrong way.

• Please note that sometimes your actions could be insulting to me.

• If you need to ask me something, please address me and not my assistant.

• Please introduce yourself whenever you meet me because I might not recognise your voice.

• If we are sitting together, please announce that you are leaving the room so I do not continue to address you while you are not there.

• And always consult me before taking any decisions on my behalf.
