AHLY recaptured what is their favourite tile, that of the domestic football league.

Ahly clinched the championship with a 2-1 victory over Ismaili on Friday to win their 38th Egyptian league title with two matches to go.

The win, coupled with second place and defending champion Zamalek’s 2-2 draw against Masri the same day gave Ahly an insurmountable seven-point lead with 74 points.

There still remains the Cairo derby between Ahly and Zamalek which, while always news, has now become an anti-climax.

The win was especially sweet for Ahly coach Martin Jol, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur. The Dutchman took over in February, in mid-season, following the sudden resignation of Portuguese Jose Peseiro. Jol’s steady performance helped ensure that Ahly would reclaim the tile which Zamalek captured after an eight-year Ahly run.

“I’m happy. This is the first league title for me, and I will not forget it all my life,” Jol, 60, told reporters.

“Our team is the best and biggest team in Egypt and this title assured that for all the people here.”

Jol and Aly must now set their sights on the African Champions League which is in its group stage. Ahly, the record eight-time champions, made a poor start after losing 3-2 away to Zesco United of Zambia.
