Al-Ahram Weekly

Former minister of education Hussein Kamel Bahaaeddin, who introduced punitive measures against schools that beat students, died on 29 July after a long illness. He was 80. Bahaaeddin was education minister from 1991-2004 under former president Hosni Mubarak.

Bahaaeddin, who was originally a pediatrician, was the first education minister to penalise schools for hitting students.

He also introduced a new system in the Thanaweya Amma (high school’s final year) which was aborted after only one year.

Bahaaeddin graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Cairo University in 1954. Five years later he earned his pediatric PhD.

Bahaaeddin served as secretary-general of the Egyptian Youth Organisation in 1965 and was head of the Egyptian Association for Pediatrics in 1989. He was also honorable president of the International Association for Pediatric Medicine of Tropical Areas, and manager of Abul Reesh Hospital from 1983-1991.

Among his biggest accomplishments was the establishment of Educational City and the Centre of Science Exploration in Sixth of October City.

Bahaaeddin’s funeral was attended by former ministers as well as education experts and employees who called him one of the best ministers to have served the country.
