The agreement, signed in the Panorama Hall on the 12th floor of Al-Ahram’s main building, allows for the first international exhibition of exact replicas of ancient Egyptian artefacts. The signing was attended by Minister of Antiquities Khaled Al-Enani and Al-Ahram’s chairman Ahmed Al-Naggar. Japan’s Ambassador to Egypt Takehiro Kagawa also watched as Mustafa Amin, the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and Hisham Lotfi, head of Al-Ahram Advertising Agency, signed the protocol.

Al-Enani told Al-Ahram Weekly the cooperation protocol develops plans to establish touring exhibitions of replicas first touted following the success of July’s showing of replicas at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.

Amr Al-Tibi, Executive Director of the Replicas Unit at the Ministry of Antiquities, says the first show, containing 150 replicas of objects from the funerary collection of Tutankhamun, will open for nine days in April 2017 in Tokyo and then move to Osaka.

Under the terms of the protocol agreement Al-Ahram foots the bill for the costs of the exhibition, including LE3.7 million in insurance fees.
