Entre Nous: To mom with love

Let’s talk about better living! Our new interactive family corner aims to expand our lifestyle horizons with practical little pearls of wisdom from the editor and input from our readers.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to give a thought to how we’ll show our moms on this particular day how much we care. Each year we end up giving the sort of gifts we see advertised as the things moms want: flowers, perfume, candles, embellished kitchen accessories or chocolate. But expressing an interest in her wellbeing, offering help and complimenting her efforts and achievements beat the archetypal gifts any day and really make her feel special and happy.

A few ideas to celebrate your mom:

• Deliver the classic Mother’s Day treat: breakfast in bed. Cook her favourite morning meal, and tuck her favourite flowers into a small crystal vase.

• Pay your mother a visit if she lives away, or invite her for dinner and give her an elaborately wrapped package.

• Honour your mother’s memory if she’s no longer living.

• Expressing love to a mother can be one of the most appreciated gestures. There are a number of ways to tell a mom that she is loved: give her a call just to express love and appreciation, bake her a homemade treat, write a letter, e-mail or inscribe a surprise flower arrangement with a message of love.

• Frequently expressing appreciation for a mother’s efforts to support her family’s wellbeing can boost her self-confidence.

• Bring happiness to your mom’s life by showing her how much you appreciate her love and everything she does for you.

• Even the most super supermom needs time to recharge her batteries. Allowing mom this much-needed quiet time improves her quality of life.

• Being a happy mother means having a sense of self outside as a whole person. Show her that you value her as an individual, not just as a schedule coordinator.

• Helping your mom out without being asked with necessary tasks around the house beyond your normal responsibilities eases her stress levels and improves her happiness.

• Routine home maintenance can become increasingly difficult if any health or mobility challenges arise. Offering to help your mother with any needed projects around the house can make her feel truly special.

• Surprise your mother with encouraging compliments or words of support. Mothers are not immune to periods of frustration or discouragement; praise her efforts to improve her appearance through healthy diet, exercise or a stylish new haircut.

• Listen to her the first time and pay attention: no mom has ever been happy about having to repeat herself.

• Be polite and resist the urge to argue. A day without sarcasm or arguments can make even the most hardened mom happy.

• Talk with her. Ask her about her day and give her all the time she needs to answer. Let her go into detail or run off on tangents. We do a lot of talking to and at moms, but not nearly as much talking with them.
