THOUSANDS of Syrians like Hanan Hamawy in the picture are returning to their Aleppo homes ravaged by war following a successful government offensive. After the UN Security Council refused to pass Egypt’s initiative regarding a ceasefire in Syria’s largest city (drafted in collaboration with Spain and New Zealand), Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amr Abul-Ata addressed the Syrian people. “We may be unable to enforce our initiative but we have enough resolve and persistence to stand by you and use our political tools to reach a peaceful outcome,” he said. “What religion or belief or sect can justify killing and bloodshed in Syria? What on earth can you be fighting over that is worth a mother seeing her child breathe his last before her very eyes,” he added addressing the UNSC members.
