THE SECOND round of the St Mark’s Cathedral Book Fair in Abbaseya in Cairo opened its doors to the public this week, reports Nevine El-Aref.
On Monday evening, the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Centre at St Mark’s Cathedral in Abbaseya was buzzing with people as Minister of Culture Helmi Al-Namnam and head of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Centre Bishop Ermia officially inaugurated the second round of the Cathedral Book Fair.
The opening ceremony was attended by Haitham Al-Hag, head of the General Egyptian Book Organisation (GEBO), and Father Sergius Sergius, the patriarchate’s under-secretary in Cairo. “Our presence today reflects the ministry’s vocation to spread culture everywhere in Egypt,” Al-Namnam said, announcing that the ministry would be organising a special celebration next year in collaboration with the Coptic Cathedral to mark its golden jubilee.
This year’s fair will last until mid-September and display GEBO’s latest books and those published within the Family Library series at a special discount. During the opening ceremony Al-Namnam offered Ermia a GEBO award, while the bishop honoured Al-Namnam with the award of the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Centre.
