As well as being the touristic sensation of the week, the previously unknown 18th-Dynasty tomb of a goldsmith uncovered by Egyptian archaeologists on the west bank of Luxor marks a propitious sign of hope for the country’s ongoing transition. Belonging to Amenemhat, a goldsmith of the god Amun-Re, the grave nonetheless contains no gold. But, shedding light on its age and the history of the Theban necropolis at large, it is filled with ushabti figurines, mummies, sarcophagi and jewellery in precious and semi-precious stones.
