DIY storage solutions

Let’s talk about better living! Our interactive family corner aims to expand our lifestyle horizons with practical little pearls of wisdom from the editor and input from our reader

Is your home overwhelmed with clutter? Don’t worry —you’re not alone. We all have items lying around our homes waiting to be organised or smartly fitted in other places.

However, it may be time to get out your tool set and bring a little Do It Yourself style to your home storage. With only a few supplies, these easy craft projects will help you organise and streamline even the messiest trouble spots in your house.

Here are some creative DIY projects that can spruce up your place in no time and give you a great feeling of liberation:

Can organiser

Can organiser: This organiser is not just cute, but is also easy to make and just means waiting for the paint to dry. Tape your own designs on clean tin cans, and then spray or hand paint the cans with a brush. You can then spray a clear sealer on the cans to prevent the paint from chipping. The painted cans can then be used to store a variety of household items.

Shoe rack

Shoe rack: To clear up the clutter in your doorways, take pieces of PVC piping that fit the size of your shoe collection. Cut them down to shoe length and wash them thoroughly. Then stick the pipes together in formation to make a structure that can support your shoes. Place this against the wall, aligned at the front. Now you have a cheap and convenient shoe rack that will keep your shoes in order.

Magnetic make-up board:

Magnetic make-up board: Turn make-up into art with magnets instead of its taking up space on your surfaces. Take a picture frame and put a magnetic sheet inside it. Then cover this with coloured paper. Glue mini-magnets to the back of each piece of your make-up collection and then stick these up in the frame. You may need more than one magnet for larger pieces. This makes an unusual and space-saving make-up board.
