I Will Defend Myself

“I Will Defend Myself”, a photography exhibition by Nadia Mounir is on display at the Contemporary Image Collective (CIC).

The title reflects the third phase in a project Mounir has been working on since early 2016. In it she uses images from the past to talk about the present. The project is in its third phase, but the exhibition includes work from all three phases. The series engages with the question of representation of women in photographic images produced and circulated in the Arab world and their varying social status and use. The artist focuses on images outside artistic image production: private image archives, stock photography, illustrations in books, magazines, images from photo studios or product packaging. Mounir’s work looks closely at how the practice of masking, erasing or covering up body parts allows images to cross over into different contexts and modes of dissemination. Located on the border between the private and the public, the artist’s interventions also reflect the aesthetics of image editing software and the role of the artist vis-a-vis that of the hacker. Mounir completed her BA at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University in 2010. Beyond digital and analogue collages and set-up photography she also practices street and documentary photography. She participated in a number of local and international exhibitions and festivals.

The exhibition continues until 26 October
