Al Mahmal: A Second Look

UBUNTU gallery presents an exhibition of paintings by Hannah Stevenson on the theme of the pilgrimage to Mecca called  “Al Mahmal: A Second Look”. Few present-day Muslims will be aware of the hardships of crossing the Arabian desert on camel back – something that could only be done at night in the summer months – using torches or relying on moonlight.
Stevenson’s fascination with the Hajj started in 2005 when, having lived in Cairo and travelled in the Middle East, she discovered Farid Kioumgi’s collection of early Hajj photograph by the four pioneers: Sadeq Bey, Mohamed Ali Effendi Saudi, Ibrahim Rifaat and Al-Hussaini.

This exhibition is a reinterpretation of the work of these photographers. Stevensen produced 30 landscapes using saturated Lascaux paints and 20 portraits on handmade inked paper. As well as the photographers she reworks, she places herself in the company of such Orientalist painters as Louis Béroud and Ludwig Deutsch as well as modern painters like the Cairo-based Italian architect Gio Collucco, the Fauvist painter Pat Wilson and the Egyptian painter Mohamed Nagui.

The exhibition continues through 18 November
