Even though it was a friendly match, Diego Simeone and his Spanish side Atletico Madrid showed everyone how seriously they took the game as they managed to come from 2-0 down to defeat Ahly of Egypt 3-2 thanks to Kevin Gameiro who came off the bench to score an impressive hat-trick to down the Reds.

The Saturday friendly was played under the slogan “Peace Against Terrorism”. Its proceeds are to go to the families of victims of terrorist attacks in Egypt.

It wasn’t a typical friendly game between two big clubs. Ahly invited stars from the Saudi league and players from other Egyptian clubs to take part in the game in the form of Mahmoud Kahraba, Fahd Al-Muwallad, Hassan Al-Raheb and Al-Shalhoub. However, it was an Egyptian star who opened the scoring in the 39th minute as Moemen Zakaria curled in a beauty from the left hand side of the box into the far corner to send the fans in Borg Al-Arab Stadium in Alexandria crazy.

The second half witnessed a bright start from the Red Devils as they doubled their lead in the 52nd minute thanks to a somehow lucky strike from Ahmed Al-Sheikh who was in the right place at the right time to put the ball into the net in scrappy fashion after a teasing cross from Al-Shalhoub.

The 2-0 lead should have given the home side more confidence to entertain and score more given the friendly atmosphere but it was complacency that led to the fall of Hossam Al-Badri’s men. First, an unmarked Gameiro headed the ball home from inside the six yards with ease in the 64th minute to start what would turn out to be a thrilling comeback.

Ten minutes late the same player managed to draw his team level with once again an easy finish as he received the ball inside the six yards and slotted the ball home to score his second of the night. The goal saw the visitors attack aggressively as they looked to win the game after managing to find an equaliser 16 minutes from time.

In the 82nd minute Gameiro showed no mercy and proved that his team took the game seriously as he scored his third of the night after going one-on-one with goalkeeper Ahmed Adel before finishing emphatically much to the delight of Simeone who played almost all of his stars during the game, including Antoine Griezmann who came on at half time, and Fernando Torres who started the game.

The last few minutes of the match saw both teams play some good football and miss some chances until the referee ended the game after 94 minutes of entertainment.

The game witnessed two very emotional moments for the home side involving Marswan Mohsen and Zakaria, the scorer of the first goal. Mohsen was making his first appearance for the club in over a year after suffering a horrific knee injury while the game also witnessed what could be the last appearance for Zakaria with Ahly. The prolific attacker left the field in tears as he gets ready to leave to the UAE on loan. Whether he’ll return after the loan period or continue there on a permanent basis is still unknown.
