Fabulous at 50

Fabulous at 50

Are you in your 50s or older and want to look fabulous? Are you at an age where you’re experiencing wrinkles, fine lines, and other changes in your skin? Feeling insecure? Cheer-up — with the right look, the right habits, and the right attitude, you’ll be walking around feeling decades younger than you actually are.

No doubt aging gracefully is easier said than done. By the time we hit our 50s or beyond, our bodies begin to change. We suddenly don’t see the skin, eye, lips or teeth that we are used to seeing. We even lose hair where we need it and find it popping up where we don’t want it. And the basic health and beauty habits we had during our 20s and 30s when our bodies were strong are not sufficient anymore.

Though being in our 50s or above is great, keeping ourselves healthy and beautiful takes work. The key to looking your most beautiful after 50 is taking care of yourself from the inside out. It’s not about looking like you’re in your 20s; it’s about prevention and maintenance.

Embrace your age, define your signature look, and incorporate your solutions to the most popular beauty and make-up concerns to begin the journey to prevent and reverse the signs of aging.

Here are some beauty tips to gain a fresh, youthful look at any age:

Wear quality make-up

Wear quality make-up

Change your make-up to fit your age. Defining your brows, wearing mascara, or adding some colour to your lips and cheeks can make you look primped and polished. Stay away from liquid eyeliner and stick to thicker pencils. Don’t opt for shimmer or sparkly finished products as they will draw attention to fine lines and wrinkles.

Contour your face:

Adding low-lights around the edges of your chin and forehead add depth to your face, bringing out the light areas and your cheekbones. Add a highlighter to the “t-zone” of your face, which includes the centre of the forehead, nose, and chin. These places are all closest to the light source, so they should be the brightest. Use a make-up brush with a bit of cream concealer or pressed powder and blend the highlighter into these areas to create a youthful look.

Hydrate and nourish your skin

Hydrate and nourish your skin:

Regular moisturising is essential. Find a type of moisturiser you love and apply it daily to your face, neck, and hands. And while you’re at it, slather it on the rest of your body, too, to help you look a decade younger. You can opt for natural products if your skin is sensitive to some creams you may use.

Stay away from sun

Stay away from sun:

Rain or shine, always wear sunscreen. As we age, sun exposure starts popping up in the form of dark spots, blotches, and sometimes even cancer. Apply an SPF15 lotion regularly to moisturise your skin, keeping it hydrated and glowing.

Use an anti-aging cleanser

Use an anti-aging cleanser:

Find a cleanser that is full of nutrients. Avoid skincare creams that contain mineral oil ingredients, as these act like a plastic wrapper on the skin and don’t allow it to expel toxins or absorb nutrients. They can suffocate the skin.

Adjust your hairstyle

Adjust your hairstyle

Once you get above a certain age, your hair should soften your face. Straightened blunt cuts are problematic. They drag down your features, when you need a lift. The easiest approach is to go for face-framing layers, with or without bangs, as these can cut years off your age.

Pay attention to your nails

Pay attention to your nails:

Nails get brittle with age. Combat this by putting a strengthener on your nails, or use a strengthening nail polish. Keep them at a trim, yet delicate, length. Go for regular manicures and pedicures as an excuse to relax as well.

Plump up your brows

Plump up your brows:

Brows can thin with age, making you look older than you are. You can either fill in your brows with an eyebrow pencil, or consider something more permanent.

Dress for the best

Just because you’re in your 50s doesn’t mean you should be buttoning up and hiding your body. Go for fitted clothes that flatter your shape and draw attention to the areas you’re most confident about. Though you should be adult and professional, you should also feel comfortable, and fashionable.

Lead a healthy lifestyle

Lead a healthy lifestyle:

Getting enough sleep (at least eight hours), stick to a balanced diet, limit sodium intake, lay off on the sugar, exercise daily and have regular massages — all these will make you feel and look younger.

Drink plenty of water

Drink plenty of water:

Being properly hydrated keeps your skin looking vibrant, helps get rid of under-eye bags, and can give your face a firmer appearance.

Finally, laugh frequently, love yourself and surround yourself with others who love you.
