Threads of Gold

“Threads of Gold”, the latest exhibition of paintings by Ahmed Abdel-Gawad, was inaugurated by the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Culture Hatem Rabiaa. The work is on display at Grant gallery.

Abdel-Gawad made his name with depictions of the houses built alongside the banks of the Nile from Aswan to the Mediterranean; his love for the Nile also extended to the sources of the river as he depicted the Congo rocks. He painted the mountains of Ethiopia and Uganda and showed them in his paintings as if playing dance music, welcoming the flood. The artist then moves with the Nile through its branches in Sudan until it arrives in Nubia, the land of gold and dreams.

The artist is influenced by the charm and mystery of Aswan, his birth place, whose houses, palm trees, sailing boats, sunsets and sunrises, even dram beats he also paints. Abdel-Gawad style belongs to the school of abstract realism with a rich and warm palette of colours reflecting Aswan’s warm climate. He is also infatuated by the features of the Nubian people and their cheerful faces, which he portrays in many of his works.

The exhibition will remain on view until 1 April
